Changing the Temporary Files folder …. This really helped me at times. On my computer, I have two hard disks, and Windows was installed on the one with lower space capacity, which contained a very small amount of free space.

Whenever I wanted to installed games or software like those of Adobe, I could not because there were not enough spaces for the temporary files. It was then that the idea of Changing the Temporary Files folder came to my mind.

Changing the Temporary Files folder will benefit the user in various ways. You will definitely have more space on the disk where Windows is installed and also, you might as well notice that your computer operates a bit quicker. These are two benefits that you`ll see when changing the temporary files folder.

Changing the Temporary Files folder:-

First if you want to know the actual location of your temporary files folder, run Command Prompt ( Start, Run and type cmd ). Then as the Command Prompt window appears, type SET and a list will appear in which you can see the location of your temporary files folder.

To change the folder for the temporary files, you first should go to the Control Panel. So, go to start, and choose Control Panel from Settings.

Then, the System Properties window will appear. There, go to the Advanced tab and click on the Environment Variables button ( at the bottom ).

Tip:-
1. The System Property window can also be accessed by right-clicking on the My Computer icon on the desktop and choosing Properties.

2. It can also be accessed by pressing the Windows key on your keyboard, together with the Pause/Break key.

The Environment Variables window will be displayed to you. Now, go to the second list ( at the bottom – it is the System Variables list ). This is where you will do some editing.

Scroll down and you will see 2 variables that concern you, namely TEMP and TMP. There is two different names because some programs cannot understand one. You will have to edit the location of these two variables in order to change the location of the Temporary Files folder.

So, choose one at a time, and click on the edit button.

As you click on Edit, a new window will be presented to you, namely the Edit System Variable window. There, you have to change the Variable Value to the new location you want the temporary files to be.

You should write the complete location.

Then, do the same steps for the other one ( i.e. TMP ).

Note that if only one user is using the computer, you can also change the two temporary files variable ( TEMP and TMP ) at the upper list ( i.e. the user variables ).
